The Flute Society of Washington and the Wm. S. Haynes
Company are pleased to present the incomparable Maxence Larrieu in
concert and masterclass this coming Saturday, March 20 as part of his
three-city tour of the US. The event will be held at St. John's
Episcopal Church, 6701 Wisconsin Ave, Chevy Chase, MD 20815 from 2 pm
until 5 pm. Mr. Larrieu will present a concert at 2 pm, followed by a
masterclass from 3 to 5 pm. This event is free and open to the
public.
Born in Marseille in 1934, Maxence Larrieu is
consider ed one of the most important living flautists. He first studied
at the Academy of Music in his home town under Joseph Rampal
(Jean-Pierre's father). Earning his diploma with full marks, he joined
Gaston Crunelle’s class at the Academy of Music in Paris, and in 1951,
after only one year of study at the Academy, won the Premier Prix in
Chamber Music. He held the post of Solo Flute at the Paris Opera, which
he left to take virtuosity classes at the National Conservatory of
Geneva and at the Higher National Conservatory of Music of Lyon.
He
has made over a hundred recordings, notably with the orchestras of
Prague, Munich, Cologne, Monte Carlo, I Musici, Ensemble Instrumental de
France, Orchestre de la Sarre, Turin Philarmonic, and has been awarded
15 Record Grand Prizes. His partners in these recordings and concerts
are Arthur GRUMIAUX, Rafael PUYANA, Bruno CANINO, Gabriel TACCHINO,
Suzana MILDONIAN, Maurice ANDRE, Jean-Pierre RAMPAL. He is a guest
performer at the festivals of Osaka, Aix-en-Provence, Salzburg,
Montreal, Sydney, Rome and Barcelona.
Since 1964 he has been
regularly invited to Japan, Korea, the United States and all of Europe
to give concerts and master classes.
Maxence Larrieu is
considered one of the most important representatives of the French Flute
School. Larrieu maintains an active career alternating between
performing, adjudicating, holding master-classes and teaching in Geneva
and Lyon. His students include such flute luminaries as Matthieu Dufour,
Jean Ferrandis, Jürgen Franz, Patrick Gallois, Massimo Mercelli, Robert
Langevin, and Giuseppe Nova.

Riders: St John's Episcopal Church is conveniently located on Wisconsin
Ave, six blocks south
of the
Bethesda
Metro Station. Walk south on Wisconsin Avenue; you will see the
church on the left, across from CVS pharmacy at the corner of Bradley
Lane and Wisconsin Avenue. There is a pedestrian crosswalk with a light
to cross over to the east side of the street.
Ride On Bus #34 with
a route from Friendship Heights Metro to Wheaton Metro via Bethesda stops on Wisconsin Avenue at our front door traveling
from Friendship Heights and across the avenue near the CVS on the return
trip to Friendship Heights.
