Wallace Mann Orchestral Audition and Masterclass Competition

 

To be held at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair

The Wallace Mann Orchestral Audition and Masterclass Competition is open to flutists who are age 18-25 by February 1, 2008, live or attend school in Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia or West Virginia and are capable of demonstrating a high level of playing ability. This competition is in two sections: an actual mock audition followed by a masterclass. Up to four finalists will be chosen to perform a mock audition at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, where prizes of $500 and $250 will be awarded.  A masterclass will be held with finalists playing excerpts selected from the mock audition round repertoire.  

All recordings must be on compact disc with no speaking on the recording. A written application including name, address, telephone, email address, date of birth, flute teacher and a short biographical sketch (under 100 words) should be mailed along with a $15 fee (check made payable to Flute Society of Washington) and recording to:

Accompaniment is not necessary for this recording.  Entries must be post marked by December 31, 2007, and received by January 5, 2008. All finalists must register for the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair.  The decision of the judges is final.

 

Orchestral Audition and Masterclass Competition recorded repertoire round, presented in the following order:

1. Mozart: Concerto in G, exposition (beginning to m. 91)

2. Debussy: Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun - Opening Solo (beginning to rehearsal 3)

3. Beethoven: Leonore Overture #3 - Bar 328 to 360

4. Bizet: Carmen Suite #1 - Intermezzo (until 11 bars after A)

5. Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel: Rehearsal 6 to Rehearsal 8 and Rehearsal 33 - Rehearsal 34

6. Ravel: Daphnis and Chloe Suite #2 – Rehearsal 176 until 2 after Rehearsal179

 
Repertoire for the mock audition and the master class will be selected from recorded round repertoire and the following additional excerpts:

1. Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra: Intermezzo interotto, 136 to 144

2. Brahms: Symphony #4: Movement 4, bar 93 to 105

3. Mendelssohn: Midsummer Night's Dream - Scherzo, 2 before P to the end

4. Rossini: William Tell Overture: 1 after F to 18 before H

5. Stravinsky: Firebird Suite: L'oiseau de feu plus variation
