2009 Competition Announcements

Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair

sponsored by The Flute Society of Washington, Inc.

February 21-22, 2009

All applicants:

1. All auditions must be recorded on compact disc (CD). There must be no speaking recorded. Each selection, movement or excerpt must be recorded continuously without stopping, restarting, or splicing.

2. A preliminary or final round performance in excess of the maximum performance time allotted will disqualify the applicant.

3. All applicants must be a current (2008) member of The Flute Society of Washington or enclose membership dues with application. Membership dues for the FSW are: student member $10 and full member $20. The membership year follows the calendar year.

4. A recording, applicable fees and a written application (online pdf application available at fsw.net) must be postmarked by November 15, 2008. Applications with a later postmark date will be returned. If entering more than one competition, each competition application, applicable fees and recording must be sent separately from other competitions. All applicable fees (or dues statement) must be included with the corresponding competition application. Please list the competition for which you are applying on the outside of the package. 5. Incomplete applications will NOT be judged or returned. Please check to be sure that all requirements have been met and are enclosed. Please note that no printed application form is needed but an online version is available for your convenience (fsw.net).

6. The decision of the judges is final.

7. All competitions, EXCEPT the Young Artist Competition and the Orchestral Audition Competition, are limited to performers who live or attend school in the Mid-Atlantic States (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, West Virginia, Washington, DC, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania). The Young Artist Competition has no residency restrictions. The Wallace Mann Orchestral Audition Competition is limited to flutists who live or attend school in Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia or West Virginia.

8. Flutists may enter more than one competition but can only be selected to perform in one event at the flute fair.

9. Please enclosed a self-addressed stamped envelope, if an applicant would like judges’ comments.

10. If you would like to confirm receipt of your recording/application, enclose a self-addressed stamped postcard. Only postcards will be returned.

  The Young Artist Piccolo Competition

The Young Artist Competition is for outstanding piccolists, under the age of 30 (as of February 1, 2009), who have completed an undergraduate degree at a college, university, or conservatory.  Finalists for the Young Artist Piccolo Competition will be selected, on the basis of their recorded audition, to compete on Saturday at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair.  Cash prizes ($1,000, $750 & $500) will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate.

Requirements:
1. A recording containing the following selections in this order:
      a) Raymond Niverd’s Piccolo Concerto—mvt.1 and 2, published by Gerard Billaudot Ed.
      b) Repertoire of the applicant's choice, not to exceed 10 minutes. All works for piccolo and 
          keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.

2.  A list of repertoire of the applicant's choice to be performed, if selected as a finalist. The repertoire should cover at least two periods of music and begin with the required concerto.  The final repertoire list cannot be changed. Maximum time: 20 (twenty) minutes including the Niverd Concerto. Music written for piccolo is strongly encouraged.

3. A written application listing name, address, telephone, e-mail address, school, degree level, flute teacher, date of birth, a short biographical sketch (under 100 words), and a list of repertoire performed on the audition tape.

4.  A $30.00 application fee and payment of dues or a statement that FSW dues have been paid.

 
The Wallace Mann Orchestral Audition and Masterclass Competition

The Wallace Mann Orchestral Audition and Masterclass Competition is open to flutists who are age 18-25 by February 1, 2009, live or attend school in Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia or West Virginia and are capable of demonstrating a high level of playing ability. This competition is in two sections: an actual mock audition followed by a masterclass. Up to four finalists will be chosen to perform a mock audition at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, where prizes of $500 and $250 will be awarded.  A masterclass will be held with finalists playing excerpts selected from the mock audition round repertoire.  No accompaniment should be used on the recording. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate.

Requirements:
1. A recording containing the following excerpts presented in this order:

1. Mozart: Concerto in G, exposition (beginning to m. 91)

2. Debussy: Prelude to Afternoon of a Faun - Opening Solo (beginning to rehearsal 3)

3. Mendelssohn: Midsummer Night's Dream - Scherzo, 2 before P to the end

4. Rossini: William Tell Overture: 1 after F to 18 before H

5. Strauss: Till Eulenspiegel: Rehearsal 6 to Rehearsal 8 and Rehearsal 33 - Rehearsal 34

6. Ravel: Daphnis and Chloe Suite #2 Rehearsal 176 until 2 after Rehearsal 179

Repertoire for the mock audition and the master class will be selected from recorded round repertoire and the following additional excerpts:

1. Bartok: Concerto for Orchestra: Intermezzo interotto, 136 to 144

2. Brahms: Symphony #4: Movement 4, bar 93 to 105

3. Beethoven: Leonore Overture #3 - Bar 328 to 360

4. Hindemith: Symphonic Metamorphosis, movement 3 - solo 5 before C to the end

5. Stravinsky: Firebird Suite: L'oiseau de feu plus variation

2. An application listing name, address, telephone, e-mail address, school, degree level, flute teacher, date of birth, and a short biographical sketch (100 words or less).

3. A $15.00 application fee and payment of dues or a statement that FSW dues have been paid.


COLLEGIATE SOLOIST COMPETITION

The Collegiate Soloist Competition is for outstanding flutists, under the age of 28 (as of February 1, 2009), who are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at a college, university, or conservatory. Finalists will be selected, on the basis of their recorded audition, to compete at the Flute Fair. Cash prizes will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate. 

Requirements
1. A recording containing the following selections in this order:
        a. Mozart's Concerto in G, first mvt. (m. 1-91)
        b. Repertoire of the applicant's choice, not to exceed 10 minutes. All works for flute and
            keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.

2. A list of repertoire of the applicant's choice to be performed, if selected as a finalist. Final repertoire list cannot be changed. Maximum time: 10 minutes. In addition to final repertoire, all finalists will begin their program with the Mozart Concerto in G, first movement (m.1-91). This is in addition to the maximum time.

3. An application listing name, address, telephone, e-mail address, school, degree level, flute teacher, date of birth, a short biographical sketch (100 words or less), and a list of repertoire performed on the audition tape.

4. A $15.00 application fee and payment of dues or a statement that FSW dues have been paid.

 
Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir

The Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir is open to all high school students in grade 9-12. Members of this choir are selected on the basis of a recorded audition. The choir will rehearse during the Flute Fair weekend, culminating with a concert. Music written for flute and keyboard is not required to be recorded with both instruments, but is strongly encouraged.

Requirements:
1. A recording containing the following selections in this order:
        a) a chromatic scale, three octaves, sixteenth notes at m.m. = 80
        b) Quantz’s Presto from Arioso and Presto (Southern Music), NO REPEATS. 

2. A written application listing name, address, telephone, e-mail address, school, grade, and flute teacher.

3. A statement expressing your interest in playing piccolo, alto and/or bass flute. Please state if you can provide the instrument(s).

4.  A $10.00 application fee and payment of dues or a statement that FSW dues have been paid.

 
Guest Artist Master Class

Flutists of the highest caliber will be selected to perform in the class on Sunday at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments. Flutists performing on the 2008 guest artist masterclass are not eligible to participate in the 2009 masterclass. Guest Artist to be announced.

Requirements:
1. A recording containing the music the applicant wishes to perform in the class, if selected.

2. A written application listing name, address, telephone, e-mail address, school, grade, teacher (if applicable), statement that the performer will use the staff accompanist or provide their own,  a short biographical sketch (under 100 words), and the name of the selection(s) performed on the audition tape.

3. A $10.00 application fee and payment of dues or a statement that FSW dues have been paid.


Student Master Class

Young flutists will be selected to perform for the classes, taught by local artists and teachers, at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. The class is open to all students in grade 12 and under. Music written for flute and keyboard does not need to be recorded with both instruments, but is encouraged. At least two students from each performance level (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) will be selected to perform during the class. Flutists who performed in a student master class at the 2008 flute fair are not eligible to participate in the 2009 class at the same level. Performance level is based on the musical selection, not age or grade. This program is part of the pedagogy series. Note: Applicants are discouraged from entering required selections from other 2009 FSW competitions.

Requirements:
1. A recording of the music the applicant wishes to perform in the class, if selected.

2. A written application listing name, address, telephone, e-mail address, school, grade, flute teacher, number of years of study, a statement that the performer will use the staff accompanist or provide their own, a short biographical sketch (under 100 words), and the name of the selection on the tape.

3. A $10.00 application fee and payment of dues or a statement that FSW dues have been paid.

  

FSW Student Honors Competition

This competition is for outstanding flutists in grade 12 and under. Winners will be selected on a basis of their recording from each division (Senior High School division: grade 10-12 , Junior High Division: grade 7-9 and Elementary Division: grade 6 and under). Cash and other awards will be presented to the winners at the flute fair. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate in the same division. The decision of the judges is final. Note: Honors Competition winners may perform in any fair event since there is no final round held during the 2009 flute fair.

Requirements:
1. A recording containing: Alphone Duvernoy’s Concertino, Op. 45, Southern Music or Schirmer collection(Senior Division), Caesar Giovannini’s Morocco, Armstrong Publisher RBC Publications (Junior Division) or Michael Isaacson’s  November Song (TAKE REPEAT), Alry Publications (Elementary Division).

2. A written application listing name, address, telephone, e-mail address, school, grade, flute teacher, and a short biographical sketch (under 100 words)

3. A $15.00 application fee and payment of dues or a statement that FSW dues have been paid.
