Applications and recordings will be submitted online and can be uploaded only after the 2010 membership dues
and application fee has been paid.
Recording should be a .mp3 file. Only one file should be uploaded.
Your file should be named in the following manner: use first two letters of your first name, first two letters of your middle name and first four letters of your last name. Use "x" for any missing letters. Example: Jane Sally Sun would be jasasunx.mp3.
Make sure that the recording itself demonstrates the highest possible audio quality so that your performance can be evaluated successfully.
Do not edit within a selection or electronically alter the recording.
Results will be available online at the FSW website on or before January 15, 2011.
Never upload a video recording.
Accompanists are the responsibility of the finalists for the Young Artist and Adult Artist Competition. Master class finalists may use the staff accompanist or provide one at their own expense.
Flutists may enter more than one competition but can only be selected to perform in one event at the flute fair.
A preliminary or final round performance in excess of the maximum performance time allotted will disqualify the applicant.
The decision of the judges is final.
All competitions, EXCEPT the Young Artist Competition are limited to performers who live or attend school in the Mid-Atlantic States (Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, West Virginia, Washington, DC, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania). The Young Artist Competition has no residency restrictions.
The Young Artist Competition
The Young Artist Competition is for outstanding flutists, under the age of 30 (as of February 1, 2011), who have completed an undergraduate degree at a college, university, or conservatory. Finalists for the Young Artist Competition will be selected, on the basis of their recorded audition, to compete on Saturday at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. Cash prizes ($1,000, $750 & $500) will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate. There is no residency requirement.
Requirements:
1. A recording containing the following selections in this order:
a) Bach's Sonata in C Major (BWV 1033) Andante-Presto and Allegro (no repeats)
b) Repertoire of the applicant's choice, not to exceed 10 minutes. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.
2. A list of repertoire of the applicant's choice to be performed, if selected as a finalist. The repertoire should cover at least two periods of music and begin with the required Bach selections from the preliminary round. The final repertoire list cannot be changed. Total maximum time is 20 (twenty) minutes including required music and time between movements.
3. Submit an online application, pay $30 application fee, be a 2010 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio recording.
The Adult Artist Competition
The Adult Artist Competition is for outstanding flutists, age of 30 and over (as of February 1, 2011). Finalists for the Adult Artist Competition will be selected, on the basis of their recorded audition, to compete at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. Cash prizes will be awarded. See residency requirement listed under all applicants.
Requirements:
1. A recording containing the following selections in this order:
a. Muczynski Sonata for Flute & Piano:(II) Scherzo
b. Repertoire of the applicant's choice, not to exceed 10 minutes. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.
2. A list of repertoire of the applicant's choice to be performed, if selected as a finalist. The repertoire should cover at least two periods of music and must begin with the final round required selection: Hoover’s Winter Spirits. The final repertoire list cannot be changed. Total maximum time is 20 (twenty) minutes including the required selection and time between movements, etc.
3. Submit an online application, pay $20 application fee, be a 2010 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio preliminary recording.
Student Honors Competition
This competition is for outstanding flutists in grade 12 and under. Three finalists will be selected on the basis of their recording for each division (Senior High School division: grade 10-12, Junior High Division: grade 7-9 and Elementary Division: grade 6 and under) to perform at the flute fair. Cash and other awards will be presented to the winners at the flute fair. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate in the same division. The decision of the judges is final. See residency requirement listed under all applicants. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.

(Senior Division): Widor’s Suite Op. 34 No. 1: IV. Finale (any publisher) or
(Junior Division): John Rutter’s Suite Antique: 4. Waltz 5. Chanson, (Oxford Music, pub.) or
(Elementary Division): Ricky Lombardo’s Gypsy Dance from Solo Spotlight (LMP, pub.)
2. Submit an online application, pay $15 application fee, be a 2010 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio preliminary recording.
3. Final round repertoire is:
(Senior Division): Gary Schocker’s Solosuite (Theodore Presser, pub.)
(Junior Division): Glass’s Serenade (Elkan Vogel, pub.)
(Elementary Division): Ricky Lombardo’s Gypsy Dance from Solo Spotlight (LMP, pub.)
Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir
The Mid-Atlantic High School Flute Choir is open to all high school students in grade 9-12. Members of this choir are selected on the basis of a recorded audition. The choir will rehearse during the Flute Fair weekend, culminating with a concert. Selected choir members are required to be in attendance at all scheduled rehearsals over the weekend, no exception. Music written for flute and keyboard should be recorded with both instruments. See residency requirement listed under all applicants.
Requirements:
1. A recording containing the following selections in this order:
a) a chromatic scale, three octaves, sixteenth notes atm.m. = 80 , articulation: slur up the scale, tongue two/slur two down the scale
b) Handel Sonata in F Major, (I) Larghetto and (II) Allegro (no repeats).
2. Submit an online application, pay $15 application fee, be a 2009 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and upload an audio preliminary recording.
Guest Artist Master Class
Flutists of the highest caliber will be selected to perform in the class on Sunday at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments. Flutists performing on the 2010 guest artist master class are not eligible to participate in the 2011 master class. See residency requirement listed under all applicants.
Requirements:
1. A recording containing the music the applicant wishes to perform in the class, if selected.
2. Submit an online application, pay $10 application fee, be a 2010 FSW member (dues can be paid online) and
upload an audio preliminary recording.
Student Master Class
Young flutists will be selected to perform for the classes, taught by local artists and teachers, at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair. The class is open to all students in grade 12 and under. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded with both instruments. Flutists who performed in a student master class at the 2010 flute fair are not eligible to participate in the 2011 class. b) Any grade 1 or 2 solo, duet or trio from the Virginia or Maryland band manuals
c) Any one from Gary Schocker’s Native American Suite

Wallace Mann Orchestral Audition and Master Class
The Wallace Mann Orchestral Audition and Masterclass Competition is open to flutists who are age 18-25 by February 1, 2009, live or attend school in Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia or West Virginia and are capable of demonstrating a high level of playing ability. This competition is in two sections: an actual mock audition followed by a masterclass. Up to four finalists will be chosen to perform a mock audition at the Mid-Atlantic Flute Fair, where prizes of $500 and $250 will be awarded. A masterclass will be held with finalists playing excerpts selected from the mock audition round repertoire. No accompaniment should be used on the recording. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate.

Repertoire for the mock audition and the master class will be selected from recorded round repertoire and the following additional excerpts:
