Young Artist Competition
The Young Artist Competition is for outstanding flutists, ages 29 or younger, as of February 1, 2025, who have completed an undergraduate degree at a college, university, or conservatory. Three finalists will be selected for the final round held at the annual Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. Cash prizes of $1,000, $750, and $500 may be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate. There is no residency requirement. Applicant must be a current full or life member of the FSW. Music written for flute and keyboard must be recorded with both instruments. Accompanist for the final round is the responsibility of the finalist.
Requirements*
- Online application and fee, $40
- Submit a preliminary round recording containing the following: Chen Yi, Memory (Theodore Presser) and additional repertoire of the applicant’s choice. Total time for all repertoire is not to exceed 15 (fifteen) minutes.
- Final round repertoire: Chen Yi, Memory (Theodore Presser) from the preliminary round and at least two selections of the applicant’s choice, which may be different from preliminary round selections. The repertoire should cover at least two periods of music. The final round performance will begin with the required music selection. Application requires final round repertoire, including titles, movements, composer's dates, and publishers. Finalists will be bound by their original selections. Total maximum time is 20 (twenty) minutes including the required selection, applicant’s selections, and time between movements/pieces.
