Honors Competition

The Honors Competitions is for outstanding flutists in grade 12 and under, who attend school or are homeschooled in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined in the general competition rules*. Three finalists will be selected in each division for the final round held at the annual Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention. This competition has three divisions: Senior Division - grade 10-12, Junior Division - grade 7-9, and Elementary Division for grade 6 or younger. Cash and other prizes will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate in the same division. The decision of the judges is final. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments. Applicant must be a current student member of the FSW at date of application.

Requirements*

  1. Online application and fee, $20
  2. Submit a preliminary round recording containing the following selection based on the division the applicant is entering:
    • Elementary Division: Mike Mower, No. 24 You Know It's Good For You from The Modern Flute Player (Itchy Fingers)
    • Junior Division: Ernesto Köhler, No. 5 Allegretto from 35 Exercises for Flute, Op. 33 (any edition)
    • Senior Division: Jacques Castérède, No. 1 Vivamente from Twelve Studies for Flute (Leduc)
  3. Final round repertoire by division:
    • Elementary Division: Mike Mower, No. 24 You Know It's Good For You from The Modern Flute Player (Itchy Fingers)
    • Junior Division: Georges Bizet/arr. Simon Hunt, Segidillua from A Bizet Notebook for solo flute (Spartan Press)
    • Senior Division: Pierre-Octave Ferroud, Trois Pièces, I. Bergère Captive (Salabert)
