General Competition Information, Rules, and Regulations

• All applicants must be a current FSW members at the time the entry is submitted.

• If chosen as a finalist or convention performer, applicants must be a current FSW member with a renewal date of 3/1/2027 or later, at the time of the convention and register for the convention by January 6, 2027. Join or renew  the Flute Society of Washington membership.

• Competitions are open to members based on membership type as follows:
  • Young Artist: full and life members
  • Collegiate Soloist: student members only
  • Guest Artist Master Class Performer: life, full and student members
  • Adult Amateur Performer Competition: full and life members
  • High School Choir: student members only
  • Honors Competition: student members only

• All competitions EXCEPT the Young Artist Competition are limited to performers who live or attend school in the following Mid-Atlantic states: Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, North Carolina, West Virginia, Washington, DC, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

• All applicants must complete an online application which includes a video recording, and must be submitted by November 1, 2026 at 5:00 pm EST. No late entries accepted. Online applications open August 20, 2026, 9:00 am EDT.

• If entering more than one competition, a separate application and recording is required for each competition.

• Preliminary auditions require a video recording of the required musical selection(s) for each competition. There should be no descriptive metadata, video titles, descriptions, and channel names which contain the applicant's name or identifying information.

• Each required selection, movement, or excerpt must be recorded in a single, continuous take. A single camera must be used and remain at the same angle throughout the performance. The applicant's face and hands must be clearly visible at all times during the recording.

• The video file should be uploaded to YouTube as UNLISTED. You are required to provided the YouTube link to submit your application.

• Recordings should demonstrate the highest possible audio quality to ensure the performance can be evaluated accurately. No spoken introductions, comments, or explanations are permitted. Audition recordings will be judged exclusively on the quality of the audio performance. The video portion of the submission will not be considered in the evaluation process.

• Each required movement, work, or selection may be recorded separately; however, each recording must be a continuous, uninterrupted performance of the complete movement, work, or excerpt, without edits. All required recordings must be combined and submitted as a single video file uploaded to YouTube.

• By submitting an audition recording, the applicant certifies that each performance is continuous and unaltered.

• Results will be available on the FSW website and each applicant will receive an email on or before December 15, 2026.

• Flutists may enter more than one competition, but can only perform in one event or competition.

• A preliminary or final round performance in excess of the maximum performance time, specified by the rules, WILL disqualify the flutist.

• Incomplete applications will be subject to disqualification.

• Application fees and membership dues are not refundable. Read and review all rules and requirements carefully.

• The decision of the judges is final.

• The FSW reserves the right to cancel any competition if the number or quality of applicants is insufficient to ensure a viable and competitive event.

Note: Do not set your audition video to Private, as evaluators will not be able to access it. The video must remain available and set to Unlisted through the completion of the adjudication process. No videos should be made public until after the  convention in February 2027.
