May 18, 2008 / 2:00 p.m. - Woodbridge Flute Choir Presents Spring Benefit Concert for BEACON (Bristow, VA)

Event Details: The Woodbridge Flute Choir, Debbie Gilbert, Artistic Director, will present its Spring Concert on May 18, 2008 at 2:00 PM at the Saint Benedict Monastery Chapel at 9535 Linton Rd., Bristow, VA 20136. The concert will be a benefit concert for BEACON. BEACON is a ministry founded in 1992 by Sister Eileen Heaps which provides tutoring to adults in the areas of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages), GED (high school equivalency) and basic literacy (reading, writing, and math). Trained volunteers work with individuals and small groups at partners' sites throughout the western Prince William County, Virginia area. BEACON also provides life-skills workshops on topics such as health and safety, nutrition, financial literacy, parenting skills and community resources. Admission to the concert is free. Donations for BEACON will be accepted at the door. The Woodbridge Flute Choir is an affiliate of, and is generously supported by, the Prince William County Arts Council. June 1, 2008 - 2:00-4:00 pm - Yoga for Flutists (Takoma Park, MD)

Event Details: Yoga for Flutists with Maria Hamburger It is not just the fingers and mouth that play the flute, but the whole body. When the body is aligned, the flute tone is more full and vibrant, the breath is more plentiful and supported, and technique is more effortless. Participants will learn about expanding with their breath, playing with support from their back bodies, and standing with optimum support and alignment. June 1-6, 2008 - Marina Piccinini International Flute Master Classes (Baltimore, MD)

Event Details: International Flute Master classes for the emerging artist. Open to all ages, this class is focused on advanced to professional level flautists at different stages of their careers and studies. A limited amount of participants will be selected by tapes, auditors are also most welcome. There will be daily intensive master classes with Marina Piccinini (Colette Valentine, master class pianist), as well as daily movement and control-your-breath classes with Femi Oladeji (Vienna/London). In addition, there is a special orchestral master class with Emily Skala, a piccolo master class with Laurie Sokoloff, and a Lecture Q&A session with Marina Piccinini on effective practising techniques. The week-long course will begin with a recital by Ms. piccinini and Ms. Valentine and end with a participants recital. Event Details: The Flute Society of Washington will present a Membership Recital in the beautiful new theater at the Patricia M. Sitar Center for the Arts. Enjoy music for solo flute, flute and piano, and chamber ensemble performed by FSW members and their guests. A reception will immediately follow the performance. Daily, June 23 through June 27, 2008 - Gaithersburg Flute Camp -- Intermediate-Level Players Welcome! (Derwood (Rockville), MD)

Event Details: Gaithersburg Flute Camp 2008 (Tim Friedlander, Director) will be held June 23 through June 27, daily from 9:30am - 4pm, at Mill Creek Parish UMC, Derwood, Maryland. This year's theme is "Water Music" and tuition is $450. There are two, free, evening concerts (June 26, 27) featuring the students. Intermediate players of all ages are welcome. Usually most players are students in grades 6 through 10, but we usually have an adult or two attending, and older, more advanced students would certainly enjoy the camp.
