2027 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention

We look forward to hearing the best of what you have to share at the the 2027 Mid-Atlantic Flute Convention.

Applications will be accepted only through the online convention proposal form. The online application includes a save-and-return feature, allowing applicants to begin the process and complete it at a later time. Deadline for all proposals: 11:59 pm (EDT) on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Notification of accepted proposals will be sent by email on December 1, 2026.

Proposals that are commercial in nature or primarily promote a specific product or service should not be submitted.

Membership in the Flute Society of Washington is NOT required to submit a proposal.

Incorporation of the convention theme will be considered a priority during the selection process.

Proposals are encouraged in the following categories:

• Solo Performance proposals may feature flute alone or flute with one additional performer.

• Chamber Music or ensemble proposals may include two or more performers in any instrumental configuration.

• Ensembles consisting of six or more flutists are considered flute choirs and should apply to the Flute Choir Showcase.

• Contributing Artist Lecture may include research presentations, pedagogical analyses, career-building topics, or other educational lectures.

• Panel discussion, workshop and other presentation should include a detailed outline as well as a video clip of prior presentations and/or a PowerPoint presentation. Applicants NOT submitting a video described above, should provide a video sample demonstrating their presentation skills.

• Reading Session proposals should include a detailed outline, proposed repertoire, the intended participant skill level, and an estimated timeline for the session.

The convention will accept full programs of 50 minutes, half programs of 25 minutes, and single-work proposals. Applicants are encouraged to remain flexible and indicate a willingness to have selections of submitted works combined with those of other applicants in a shared program. Applicants should indicate this preference on the proposal
form.

Applicants should provide any scheduling restrictions they may have during the convention. While every effort will be made to accommodate these requests, the organization cannot guarantee specific dates or times.

Registration for the convention is required and will confirm participation. Convention Registration requires a current member of the Flute Society with a renewal date of March 1, 2027, or later. Additional registration information and a registration link will be provided in the acceptance notification email.

Collaborative musicians, featured composers, and other assisting artists who are non-flutists are not required to register for the convention, if they are participating solely in the performance. However, if they wish to attend other convention events, a non-flutist pass may be purchased during the presenter registration or on-site at the convention.

Use of the convention staff accompanist is limited, and requests will be accommodated only as space and availability allow.

The Flute Society of Washington is committed to meeting the accessibility needs of all convention participants. Accepted presenters will have the opportunity to indicate any accessibility requirements during the acceptance process.

Individual biographies should be submitted only for soloists, accompanists, conductors, coordinators, and members of chamber ensembles consisting of five or fewer performers.

Large ensembles, including flute choirs, should submit only the ensemble biography along with a biography of the conductor or coordinator. All biographies must be written in the third person.

All performer biographies, including those of pianists and other collaborators, must be submitted with the proposal.

Biographies are limited to 500 characters and should be written third person.

Applicants must submit a program narrative that briefly explains the artistic vision, pedagogical goals, intended audience for the presentation or performance and a description how the program incorporates the convention theme, Community & Confluence.

Each proposal must include a complete program listing, including all works to be performed, composer names and dates, publisher and timings.

All required recordings and media submissions should be uploaded to YouTube as unlisted videos. Performance proposals must include a recording of the applicant’s playing. Although a recording of the proposed repertoire is preferred, a representative recording of the applicant’s performance is acceptable.

Applicants may provide supplemental materials that support the proposal. These materials may be shared through YouTube, Google Drive, or Dropbox links. Access permissions must be set so that anyone with the link can view the materials.

The convention will provide limited audio and visual resources. Applicants should clearly specify all audio, visual, and space requirements on the proposal form. Presenters are responsible for bringing any necessary adapters to connect their devices to the convention equipment. The use of a personal laptop computer or iPad is strongly recommended for playing audio files, video files, and digital presentations. Presenters must provide their own devices.

Convention staff will not provide technical support for operating audio or video equipment, so presenters should be prepared to operate their own equipment or bring an assistant if needed.

Participants should not rely solely on hotel Wi-Fi for internet access. Please download all necessary materials in advance, maintaining a backup copy on an external drive.
