Honors Competition

The Honors Competitions is for outstanding flutists in grade 12 and under, who attend school or are homeschooled in a Mid-Atlantic state as defined in the 2025 General Competition Information, Rules and Regulations. Three finalists will be selected on the basis of their recording from each division: Senior (grades 10-12), Junior (grades 7-9) and Elementary (grades 6 or younger). Cash and other prizes will be awarded. Previous first prize winners are not eligible to participate in the same division. The decision of the judges is final. All works for flute and keyboard must be recorded using both instruments.

Requirements*

  1. Online application and fee, $20
  2. Submit an audio recording containing the following selection based on the division the applicant is entering:
    • Elementary Division: Carl Nielsen, The Children are Playing (Wilhelm Hansen)
    • Junior Division: S. Bach/arr. Fritz Spiegl, No. 11 Bourrée (no repeats) from Bach for Unaccompanied Flute (Oxford)
    • Senior Division: Katherine Hoover, Reflections (Papagena Press)
  3. Final round music selection for each division:
    • Elementary Division: Carl Nielsen, The Children are Playing (Wilhelm Hansen)
    • Junior Division: Philip Glass, V. Arioso and VI. Finale from Serenade for solo flute (Presser)
    • Senior Division: Jindrich Feld, 1. Méditation and 2. Caprice from Quatre Pièces pour Flûte seule (Leduc)
